Happy Monday, teacher friends! Our state standardized testing is over! Now we are knee deep in preparing for our Constructed Response Assessment that is in one week! We just can’t catch a testing break. 😀
Speaking of a testing break, we did take some time last week after state testing to work on one of my favorite end of the year math projects: Extreme Playground Makeover. Modeled after the T.V. show the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the kids are in charge of designing an extreme playground design. The catch? They have to use geometric shapes and elements in their design incorporated into their playground features.
We started this activity by discussing the show and building background for the kids that had not heard of it. We discussed the amazing features that were added to the rooms and how it was not just an ordinary, you get a new house kinda thing.
Then, I shared the news: They would be designing a plan for an Extreme Playground Makeover. They were instantly excited, engaged and ready to work. They didn’t even mind when I told them about the challenge of adding the geometric elements.
I passed out the paper with directions and the list of geometry terms that must be included and labeled in their drawing. We went through each term and drew an example of it beside the term for reference. Unfortunately, some kids needed the reminder! Then off they went to design their playground.
They sketched their design on a planning paper, had it approved, then went to work drawing and coloring it on poster board.
Check out some of these awesome examples!
Can I get one of these? For real!
This student is such a good artist.
This one kills me! Love her creativity.
We are going to present our playground designs and speeches tomorrow! I can’t wait to hear them!
The directions, list of shapes, and planning page are all part of my End of the Year Activities for 5th Grade and a modified version with different shapes (to match 4th CCSS) for 4th grade. These End of Year Activity Packs contain twelve no prep math tasks that are perfect as an end of year activity. Check them out by clicking on the button below!
