Happy Thursday! This week has been super busy for me! I finally got to set up my classroom yesterday! School starts next week so I was working like a crazy person to get as much done as possible. I will post lots of pictures next week! I have had quite a few questions about my Roll and Answer Math Centers. I wanted to write a quick little blog post to explain how to use them and show some detailed pictures.
First, here is what one game looks like. There is also an option without the color border or colored table if you want to save your ink.
The roll and answer games are set up and grouped by domain. Each domain set contains games for every standard within that domain. Many standards have several games to practice the different aspects of the standard. The games are labeled with the standard and with a letter in the bottom corner to keep the answer sheets easily organized. Here is what an answer key looks like.
The only supplies needed to play these games are two dice, a marker, and a tissue or eraser. These can be played individually or with partners. I originally designed them as partner games, but I know a lot of teachers use them for early finishers.
How To Play:
To “play” the center, the students roll the two dice (or one dice twice), add their total, and find the roll that matches. The directions at the top tell the students what to do for each problem. You can have the students write on the game, on a piece of paper, or do both. I usually have the students write their work on a piece of paper (for accountability).
Tip: When playing with partners, I have both partners work out each problem. The student who rolled the dice gets two points for the correct answer and their partner gets one point. This keeps both partners working at all times! After solving the problem, the students use the answer sheet to check their answers.
After the first partner has rolled and solved the problem, the next partner rolls and the game continues with a new roll. If a number is rolled that is already solved, that player loses his turn. (Remember my tip from above? If you follow it, both partners will be practicing all problems so this is not a big deal.)
These games can even be printed four to a page to make adorable mini math centers!
Here is how I organize my games. I bought these poly envelopes from Office Depot for $1. I labeled the outside with the standard number and put all the games inside.
