With my goal and purpose in mind, I created reader’s response checklists to go with each Common Core state standard for Informational and Literature (3rd-5th grade available).
Here is a breakdown of one of the checklists.
I know that using this type of rigorous reader’s response that is specifically aligned with the common core standards will help my students master the standards in a way they never have before. This will help them have those rich discussions about texts that common core requires. Since these checklists are aligned to the standards, they will allow the students to continue practicing the standards they are learning during instruction with their independent reading.
Click on the images below to check out the 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade sets. The 3rd grade set is differentiated to help you support your younger readers. If you teach struggling readers in 4th or 5th, I suggest looking at the 3rd grade version. Two FREE checklists are in the preview of each set for you to try out with your students.
Do you use reader’s response in your classroom? I would love to hear about it!

This is amazing! I am going to check it out and see if my district will buy it for my kiddos. This is my first year teaching and this would be so handy. I love getting kids to a place where they are in control of their learning! The options you wrote into these are a great start for that goal.

I love these! Seeing things like this sometimes makes me miss teaching literacy. We're departmentalized, and I teach everything except literacy, but I'll definitely have to show these to my team teacher. I bet they would be really helpful!

The “conversation” I have with my students are the best part of a reader’s response letter. Sometimes, my quietest students are the ones who are so expressive about their reading, it is such a treat to read their letters. I learn many things about them as a reader and as a person.

This is EVERYTHING that I have been looking for!!! This is also such a great format for students to be able to look back at what they’ve read throughout the year. I love it!

Hello! These are great- do you have the pictured sample letter/slides or a rubric that goes with the assignment?
SARAH says
Hi Jennifer! How often do you have students complete these responses? I work in a low-income school with a lot of VERY reluctant writers and think this could be a great way to get them comfortable with writing more – do you use this weekly, when they finish a book…? Thanks! 🙂
Jennifer Findley says
Hi Sarah, typically every other week. They have two weeks to work on their letter, either during independent reading time or during a specific reader’s response center that they may visit once a week. Depending on the length of their book, they may do one letter per book or several. Thanks for your question!

I just moved to 5th/6th ELA this year, after teaching 11 years of K/1. I have always done guided reading and had a difficult time finding rigorous upper-grade level material. I just want to thank you!!! This material is exactly what I was looking for. Would you possibly consider creating a 6th-grade list? I would be happy to pay for it.

I am having trouble finding the link for the fifth grade readers response letters bundle. Is there any chance you could share the link? Thank you.
