Beach balls are so much fun on the sand or in the pool and they can be just as much (well almost as much) fun in the classroom. This post will help you bring a little summer fun into your classroom with these five review games and activities that include beach balls.
Beach Ball Review Activity 1 – Beach Ball Basketball
Materials:
1 Beach ball
1 Large Bucket
How to prepare for the activity:
Clear enough space in your classroom for a 6-8-foot space between your student and the bucket.
How your class does this activity:
Students line up for a chance to throw the ball into the bucket. Each student gets three chances to throw the ball. When the student makes a basket, they answer a review question to get two points. If the student is not able to make a basket, he or she can answer a question for a point. The student with the most points at the end of the activity wins.
How you can vary this activity:
A) Instead of making this a competition, allow students to gain points towards a class reward.
B) Leave the points out altogether, and simply give each child three chances to throw the ball before answering a question.
Beach Ball Review Activity 2 – Pass the Ball
Materials:
1 Beach Ball
List of questions and answers if you choose to use the variation on the game.
How to prepare for the activity:
Have your class stand in a circle.
How your class does this activity:
You hand the ball to the first student and ask a question. The student answers the question, and then passes the ball to his or her left. You ask the next student a question, and that student answers you. If the student is able to answer the question, he or she stays in the game. If the student is not able to answer the question, he or she sits down and the next student answers the question. Continue passing the ball, asking questions, and playing the game until one student is left standing or you’ve covered all your review material.
How you can vary this activity:
Choose one or two students to be the questioners. Give them a list of questions to ask and the answers, to extend student involvement in the activity.
Beach Ball Review Activity 3 – Popcorn Questions and Answers
Materials:
1 Beach Ball
How to prepare for the activity:
Divide the class in half and line the students up facing each other.
How your class does this activity:
Start with the beach ball on one side of the line. A student on the first side asks a question related to the material, then throws the ball to a student on the other side. The receiving student must answer the question or throw the ball to another student for the answer. Once the question is answered, the student throws the ball back to the other side for another question.
Beach Ball Review Activity 4 – Hands on the Beach Ball
Materials:
Beach Ball
Dry Erase Marker
How to prepare for the activity:
On the beach ball, use the dry erase marker to write six different questions, genres, or equations.
How your class does this activity:
Have your students stand in a circle or push their chairs out of the way. Toss the ball into the group. When a student catches the ball, he or she must answer the question that his or her right hand lands on. The student then tosses the ball to another student for another answer.
How you can vary this activity:
For an advanced version, divide the beach ball into 12 or 18 different sections and write questions or vocabulary words in each section.
Beach Ball Review Activity 5 – What’s the Number?
Materials:
1 Beach Ball
Marker, Permanent or Dry-Erase
How to prepare for the activity:
Label your beach ball sections with a permanent marker and a number. Create a task that must be completed depending on the number the student’s hand touches.
How your class does this activity:
On the board, write a label for each section. For example – When reviewing a story, write the numbers 1-6 on the board, and label them plot, characters, setting, genre, climax, and cause and effect. When the student catches the ball, he or she must describe something from the section where his or her hand rests. You can then re-use the labeled ball for another subject later.
