One of the hardest parts about distance learning is not being able to see and talk with our students on a regular basis. Even if you are doing video conferences, it is hard to know how students are doing and if they need help. One option is to have daily check-ins using Google Forms. This post shares free daily check in google forms for distance learning and some tips for how to use them.
Note: The PDF now includes links to Weekly Check-Ins as well!
About the Daily Check-In Google Forms
These daily check-in Google Forms are one way to check in your with students on a daily basis. The responses can also be shared with special education or any support staff who serve the students.
I have included two check-in forms for you: one for the beginning of the day and one for the end of the day. You can send both of the forms or choose to only send one.
Beginning of the Day Check-In Form
This form is designed to check in with the students before they begin their assignments (but after they locate them).
The form asks the following questions:
- How are you feeling today?
- Do you have anything to tell me? This can be about school or life.
- Were you able to find all of your work for today?
- Do you need any help getting started with your assignments?
- What questions do you have about your assignments?
End of the Day Check-In Form
This form is designed to check in with the students as they finish their learning for the day.
The form asks the following questions:
- How are you feeling now?
- How did you to do today?
- How do you feel about your assignments today? (This is a linear scale with “I didn’t understand anything” at one end and “I understood everything” at the other end.)
- Do you have anything to tell me? This can be about school or life.
Note: There are now links to Weekly Check-Ins included in the PDF download as well!
Modifying the Check-In Forms
After you copy the forms to your drive, you may go in and modify any of the questions and/or add new questions. These screenshots are also included in the free download.
Assigning the Check-In Forms
When assigning the forms, I recommend you make a new copy for each week (you can keep the responses organized using the spreadsheet that Google Forms generates).
Another way to send the Check-In Forms to your students is to link them via a Google Slides Template. Here is an example template. The link to copy this template can be found in the section titled Get the Free Daily Check-In Google Forms and Slide Template Here.
Viewing the Responses
You can easily view the responses by generating a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is automatically sorted by date and time so you can keep your responses organized. You can also sort the responses alphabetically by student name.
***Get the Free Daily Check-In Google Forms and Slide Template Here
Note: make sure you copy the forms to your drive. If you manipulate the link, you will be compromising your students’ data. YOU MUST COPY THE FORM TO YOUR DRIVE AND CREATE A NEW FORM THAT IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS!
Note: There are now links to Weekly Check-Ins included in the PDF download as well!

I love your daily check in forms. Is there any way you could modify the form for me? I am looking to take away silly and add I feel lonely and I need to talk 1:1.
Suzy Daley says
Shannon, if you print off her “How to Copy and Rename the Check-In Google Forms” information, it shows you how to modify the questions.
Wanda Staley says
I have the form working in Canvas. However, in Student View, my students can see the editing tools and responses tab. How do I change this?
Jennifer Findley says
Hi Shannon, I wish I had time to make these modifications but I really don’t. Like Suzy mentioned, I did include instructions to edit the forms in the PDF. Hope those work for you!
Cherie Richens says
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you so much for this resource! My students are loving the morning and afternoon check-ins. I was wondering if you have any tips for responding individually to my students as they answer the ‘do you have anything to tell me?’ question. We are using Google Classroom as our online platform.
TIA

Thank you for this resource. Is there a way to modify the texts of the banner and images. I am a Bilingual Spanish Teacher and only use Spanish with my class.

Kari says
Hi!!
For the daily check in, how does that work from one day to the next? If I shared the link today and have responses, do I reset it somehow to share again tomorrow?
Thanks!!
Cassi Hoerst says
First of all, I absolutely LOVE this! I found it at midnight last night and had to add it to my Google Classroom so they could complete it today! I’m one of those “have to start on Monday” kind of people! I am having difficulty seeing their responses. Could you please send me the directions in an email? It is a little hard for me to see them on this webpage for some reason! Thank you so much for all of your hard work!
Jennifer Findley says
Just sent you an email. 🙂

Yes! Having this same issue 🙁 it makes it look “ugly” and not very functional on the students end!! What am I a doing wrong?!? I followed all the directions and cant seem to fix the ugliness 🙁
Jennifer Bencosme says
Love love love!!!! Thank you Jennifer
Renee says
These are amazing. Thank you! Is it ok to share these with other teachers from my Google Driveor do you prefer that they get them directly from your blog? Of course, I would give you the credit.
Lisa Polack says
Can you please share how you set up the form so it forced us to make a copy in order to access it? I was trying to share some forms this way with other librarians and didn’t see the option to share as view only forcing the ‘make a copy’ option. I would love to know how you did it!
Thanks!
Stephanie Cook says
Thank you, great resource during this time!

Hi Cherie, there is no way to respond through google forms. But I am working on getting a post up to share ways to “meet” or touch in with students individual through Google Hangouts (and not just video).
Tiffani says
Hoping to get the same answer 🙂
Kate says

Hi! I love the idea of a daily check-in form, but I can not access the form itself. I tried to create a log in for your digital library, and it came back with an error.

THANK YOU FOR THESE AWESOME FORMS. I have had a huge response to them this week by my kiddos. BTW, Where did you find the cute emojis? Would love to add different ones if they are available somewhere!
Thank you for all that you are doing to help teachers with distance learning. You are the best!
Stacy Provenzano says
Hi Kelly,
I had the same question about the emjois. By any chance, did you find them? I have been looking and looking.
Paula says
No I ended up using my Bitmoji character and the kids loved it!!
Siubhan Drinnan says
Hi! I love the idea and am thinking about how to incorporate it. Just wondering how you made your backgrounds… Did you just lock all the images and text boxes? I teach in French and would like to make a version that I can provide all instructions in French. Thanks!!!
Jen says
This is amazing! Thank you for sharing. Do you happen to have a version that says “End of Week Check In” and “How did your week go?”. With all the other work I’m pushing out, I don’t think I would have time to do this daily, but I would love to do it weekly!
Jennifer Findley says
I love this idea! I will see about making a modified version for this purpose sometime this week. I will comment back on here when I get it added.
Charelette Smith says
I was looking to do the same thing…change to a weekly form. I have edited everything within the form itself to reflect weekly, but can not seem to change the banner at the top. I am pretty tech savy, but think it must be a locked image. I would love to have a weekly version also, if possible.
Jennifer Findley says
Hi Charelette, I just added Weekly Check-Ins! Re-download the PDF to grab copies of those forms!
Jennifer Findley says
Hi Jen, I just added Weekly Check-Ins! Re-download the PDF to grab copies of those forms!
Sarah says
THANKYOU!!! This is a great resource and it was easy to follow your instructions. I used it with my Stage 1 class as we have started online learning now as well. I edited your ‘End of Day Check-In’ to an ‘End of Week Check-In’ as I don’t want to do this daily but still want the students feedback on tasks set for the week.
Do you have resources for younger (6 – 8 year olds) students?
Jennifer Findley says
Hi Sarah, I just added Weekly Check-Ins! Re-download the PDF to grab copies of those forms! And I only create resources for grades 3-5. Thanks for asking!
KARYN VILLA says
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you sharing these things and helping take the stress off my shoulders. So many amazing ideas!! Thank you!
Mateo Teixeira says
HI,
I love the daily check in. Are we able to modify the slide to make it a weekly check in?
Julie says
Jennifer, You are AWESOME! I needed this training on how to make, use, and insert Google forms. Thank you so much for taking your time to make this for all of us. Thank you for giving to all of us freely. May you be blessed richly for your generosity. 🙂
Michelle Tannehill says
Thank you so much for making this free! I am responsible for checking in with 37 students every day and this will save me a ton of time!
Julieta Perez says
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Bonnie K says
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this!!!!
Since I teach at a dual language school, another teacher is creating a Spanish version of the check in and check out forms for us. Are you able to make the main slides fully editable so that we can create a Spanish version of those as well?
Thank you again.
Jana Smith says
These are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Brandi D Wegner says
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your gift and resources. I have a non form question, what font did you use for your headers? I’m a font junkie and computer teacher. I love it!!
Delisha says
I am having a difficult time trying to link the morning check-in forms to the weekly check-in in google slides. can you please advise on how to do this?
Thanks
DeAnna Sherred says
Yes : ( Im having the same issue and cant seem to find the fix to the problem !
Paula Clevenger says
I really appreciate all the resources throughout your entire site. I plan on using your Check-in Google forms tomorrow!!
I do have a question. I would love to add, “I feel anxious.” to the check-in, but I can’t find the cute little emojis that you made on line. I have a few students this year that have anxiety on a regular day let alone now! Are those yours or did they come from Google?
Again, thank you for everything.
Lauren says
I absolutely love these slides and can not wait to use them. However, I am new to google classroom. I wanted to use the google slides with the days of the week. Am I able to use the same link each day? Or do I need to make a copy for each day and link it? I am unsure if I can use the same form daily. #newbie #help!
Stacy Provenzano says
Thank you so much!! I love and appreciate this so much. Could you please tell me where you got your images for How you are feeling? I would like to change a few fir the next week.
Thank you again so much!

Hi Jennifer!! Thank you so much for sharing your hard work and making our lives just a little easier. I have a question about sharing your google form on the Monday-Friday slide. I linked the form to each text box and now I am uploading the slide into Google Classroom. At that point, do I make a copy for each student? How do you suggest I assign it? THANK YOU!!!
Alyssa says
Hi there,
Thank you for these great resources!
I have assigned it to my class, but I am not sure how to view their responses / generate a spreadsheet.
Can you please help me with that. Thanks!
Tiffani says
Hello Jennifer!
Thank you so much for the amazing daily check-in forms! I teach Kindergarten and the “emoji’s” are perfect for them to express how they are feeling. I have simplified the questions for them as well to make it easier for them, or parents, to respond. I have a question about the best way to respond, what application or format would you, or anyone else, recommend to reply to comments or acknowledge their feelings?
Nancy says
Thank you for these AWESOME resources. My colleague and I will be using the AM/PM check-in forms for our students before the start their online work with Google Classroom. Thank you for the great resources, as usual I love it all. I had a question and thought I’d ask you about it. I created a Google Form checklist for kids to keep track of their completed online assignments but when they submit the form they will have to restart the form to add in new assignments but their previous info. wont show. Is there anyway I can use this Google Form and have kids’ responses saved on the form so when they go back to add newly completely work they can see the assignments they have already completed? Like a proper checklist? Is this possible with Google Forms? If not, do you have any suggestions on how I could help students keep track of their online assignments (possible, an easy solution)?
Brittany says
Bless you for sharing this! What a wonderful resource! I love the confidentiality it gives students my students that were too shy or uncomfortable sharing on our forum or video conferences.
Candice Worling says
This is AMAZING! Thank you so much for making this and for allowing it to be a free download. As a mom I am battling to juggle things during this time. Setting up a check-in form has been on my “to-do” list, but I just haven’t got there yet -so this is a HuGe time saver! My students are going to love it too!
Meghan Davis says
Thank you for this wonderful resource. Can’t wait to use! 🙂
Meghan K says
We’re on our very last week of distance learning, but with the possibility of the fall being very much the same, I am planning on using this right away. One question: Do you simply keep the same spread sheet throughout? Or do you make a new copy of the form for every single day? Thanks for the info and the product! MK
Donna Maika says
These forms are great! Thank you SO much for sharing.
Just a very quick question. What font did you use under the emoji emotions? I’d like to add a couple extra ones and would like to use the same font.
Amy Jo Irwin says
This has been such a great tool to use with my 3rd graders through Google Classroom. I just wanted to pop on here and say thank you so much for creating this and putting it out there for us to use.
Yukie Stoll says
Thank you so much. I am teaching summer enrichment class and these will be well received!
Karen A Dean says
I am a high school teacher, but I can modify these easily to meet my needs. We were just informed that we need to make classroom participation 25% of the students grades, as well supply an in depth explanation of how this will be achieved. Knowing that we may have possible remote learning in addition to in person learning, these templates will work wonderfully! Thank you so much for sharing these – if anything, I have gained some wonderful knowledge to use!
Lillian Altamirano says
Hi Jennifer,
This is awesome…quick question…what font did you use for the banner on the check in forms?
Thank you!
Shelly Nork says
Thank you for everything! I love your work. I am trying to figure out how you made the banner for the google forms. I like the font a lot. Is there a certain extension or a website you used? I made a different form and would like to keep the same theme.
Kate K says
Thank you for sharing this valuable resource! My district is implementing zones of regulation for this school year. This tool works perfectly to help me understand what “zone” a student is in and how I can better help them. Awesome for checking in on students virtually!
Vera Willis says
Thank you for this resource. I love the amazing daily check-in forms!
Alyssa says
Hi Jennifer! Are these forms still free? I seem to be unable to click the link. Thank you so much!
Alyssa says
I had commented asking where to find the link but I got it – thank you!!
Sonya Green says
Hi,
Where did you find the link?
Jessica Farrell says
This is great! I stumbled across this site after searching for some type of check in for my 6th grade Spanish class. I made a small attempt at creating my own slide with the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…..in Spanish and a Buenos Dias/Buenas Tardes and failed miserably. I am wondering if you might have a Spanish version? I’d be willing to purchase in exchange for not having to reinvent the wheel. The Google Form was much easier to edit for Spanish class though so thank you so much!
Evelyn says
WOW! Thank you! Thank you! Truly an answer to my virtual teaching prayers. I look forward to purchasing things from you. I will tell everyone at work about your resources. You have saved me hours of trial and error. I teach a 5th grade bilingual class and the fact that I can edit (add translations) is wonderful. Thank you again. I meet with my students for the first time this school year virtually in 8 hours and now I am more excited about what their morning check in will look like for the next few weeks.
Janet says
This is an awesome idea, daily/week check-in forms, like wrapping up for a day and also a week. Thanks a lot.
