Even though parts of speech instruction starts as early as first grade, it seems 4th and 5th graders still need review…and a lot of it. If your students are the same way and you need a way for your students to practice or extend their understanding of parts of speech, then this post is for you. This post will share free parts of speech task cards for grades 4-5 (printable + digital) that help students review a variety of parts of speech in the context of a text.
About the Parts of Speech Task Cards
Have you ever conferenced with a student on the grammar from their writing only to get blank stares when you mention words like nouns and adjectives?
It can be very difficult to work on students’ grammar when they struggle to remember what the parts of speech are, let alone how to use them correctly in their own writing.
These free parts of speech task cards will provide that often necessary practice in remembering and identifying the different parts of speech.
The task cards (28 in all) require students to identify parts of speech from a small passage. The students are then asked to further demonstrate their understanding of that part of speech by completing an additional task.
Here are the parts of speech included and the additional task.
- nouns – prove why it is a noun
- verbs – prove why it is a verb
- adverbs – identify what verb is it modifying
- adjectives – identify what noun it is describing
- pronouns – identify which noun it is replacing
- nouns – identify as proper or common
- possessive nouns – sort to singular and possessive nouns
Using these task cards are a great way to review the parts of speech and allow your students to gain a deeper understanding of each of the parts of speech in the context of a story or text.
Printable Format – includes the 28 tasks cards in both color and an ink-saving black and white. This printable format also includes a recording sheet that can be copied for each student to complete their responses.
Digital Format – Students can complete the same task cards on Google Slides. They will identify the parts of speech by either dragging & dropping a circle or highlighting the correct words. They then complete the additional question by typing in the provided text boxes.
