Are you in need of new ways to engage your students while they are practicing reading skills and standards? Do your students work well with digital interactive activities? These 4th and 5th grade reading sorts are great for providing reading practice to students in a new (and non-threatening way)!
About the Digital Reading Sorts
This free reading resource includes 7 sorts presented across 14 slides. The sorts focus on six different reading skills. There are six short texts on each sorting slide that need to be sorted into three categories or discarded. The texts are presented on moveable digital cards which students can drag to read and sort.
Each sort focuses on a specific reading skill. The reading skills for this free sort include:
- Inferring with Nonfiction
- Theme
- Point of View
- Main Idea
- Text Structure
- Type of Accounts
Using the Sorts with Your Class
The reading sorts are versatile, depending on your needs in your classroom.
- Independent learning center
- Whole class skill introductory exercise
- Partner activity on a shared device
You can assign each reading sort separately to your students in Google Classroom to complete as an individual activity. Need help assigning an activity through Google Slides? Click here.
You can display the sort on your interactive whiteboard for a whole group introduction to each reading skill.
You can even use it as a reteaching tool by assigning it to partners to complete together on a shared device.
Interacting with the Digital Sorts
Students will begin the sort by dragging the top card in the stack over to the discard area. This will reveal the first text in the pile. There is a designated spot in the center of the slide to make the entire card visible when students are reading the text. The six text cards included are stacked on one another and in random order so students will have to read each one to complete the entire activity.
After reading the text on each card, students can determine whether it matches one of the categories or topics at the bottom of the slide. If it does, they simply drag the card to the spot at the bottom of the slide.
If the text does not match any of the categories given on the slide, they can discard it to the right side of the slide.
Students will continue the activity until all cards are sorted or discarded.
Each skill has two slides of categories, but uses the same six texts for both slides.
If you want to make the activity shorter or easier, you can easily delete the cards that don’t match the topics on the slide.
