Fractions are always one of those tricky skills that need lots of strong instruction, spiral review, and re-teaching/remediation. I always found that frontloading 3rd and 4th grade fractions review helped my 5th graders master grade level skills. This post will share a free set of fraction task cards that you can use in 3rd-5th grade (depending on your needs – more details on this post).
Using the Free Fractions Review Task Cards
These free fraction review task cards can be used in a variety of ways depending on your grade level, your instructional needs, and the needs of your students. Here are some ideas:
3rd Grade Math Teachers
- Use the fraction task cards relevant to your standards (see skill list below) to review. Use the 4th grade level fraction skills to challenge your students.
4th Grade Math Teachers
- Daily Review – Use these fraction task cards as a daily review after teaching your fraction unit. Project or show one task card and have your students discuss and then answer. This could be done whole group if all of your students need the fraction review or it could be done in a small group. You could even do several cards a day.
- Unit Review – These fraction task cards are perfect for a unit review before you give your fraction assessment. They can be used for SCOOT style review or an Around the Room style review.
- Re-teaching – Use the task cards to re-teach and remediate for students still struggling after fraction instruction.
5th Grade Math Teachers
- Reteaching – Every year, I have a group of students who struggle with fractions. They missed a strong background in fraction understanding in earlier grades. I use these task cards to help remediate for those students.
- Review – Before beginning your 5th grade fraction unit, use these fraction review skills to review the embedded skills that your students should know. You can use the recording sheet to assess their understanding and re-teach as needed before beginnning or while teaching 5th grade fraction skills.
