The Day After Halloween Math Activity (Free!)

One of the many things that they don’t teach you in college is just how crazy it can get before and right after a holiday, especially a holiday that is a kid favorite. The day after Halloween is probably one of the craziest days in the classroom. The students are excited about their trick-or-treating adventures from the previous day and more than likely, they are smuggling in bags of candy. This post shares a FREE “Day After Halloween” math activity that will hopefully help you channel some of that energy and excitement into productive math work.

About the Day After Halloween Math Task Cards

This “Day After Halloween” activity is a set of 28 math task cards with word problems that all have a “Day After Halloween” theme. The skills include finding half of a whole number, determining what number is half of a given amount, subtracting decimals in the form of money, and multiplication and division of whole numbers. These are best suited for grades 4-5.

Here are a few example math problems:

• A bag of candy normally sells for $4. The day after Halloween, the price is half off the normal price. What is the price of the candy the day after Halloween?
• A mixed bag of chocolate is regularly priced at $7.99. After Halloween, the price drops by $2.63. What is the sale price for the bag of chocolate?
• A bag of lollipops is $3 the day after Halloween. This price is half off the normal price. What is the normal price for the bag of lollipops?
• Milosh had a great Halloween party, but he has some candy left over that he wants to share with his 4 cousins. He counts 32 pieces of candy. How much candy will each of his cousins have in their bags if they all get equal amounts?

Ideas for Using the Day After Halloween Math Task Cards

Here are some ways you can use these free “Day After Halloween” math task cards in your classroom.

Around the Room – Tape them around the room and get your students up and burning off that sugar. The students will walk around the room (at your pace or on their own) to solve the questions. Read more about this engaging but super easy to prep review activity here.

SCOOT – Place a task card at each desk and have the students rotate around (at your signal) and solve the problems. If you have more than 28 students, make an extra copy of a few of the task cards.

Math Centers/Stations – Replace one of your regular guided math centers or math stations with these task cards. Your students will be engaged in the theme AND getting in some much needed word problem practice.
